Biography

Alice Chamberland (née Grzesiak), age 96, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 8, 2018. Born on December 3, 1921, in Chicago, Alice’s adventurous spirit and love of travel took her on many trips around the world. At 26 years of age, in an era when most women were already married with children, Alice left her job as a typist and embarked on a solo adventure to the Alaskan frontier, where she became a civilian employee of the United States Air Force. It was on the Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage where Alice would solicit a ride to Chicago from a handsome soldier, Eugene, who would soon become her husband. Once Gene’s tour ended, he and Alice relocated back to Chicago where they opened their first jewelry store. After losing their business twice to looting and a fire, Alice and Gene relocated the store to Wood Dale, IL, where Georgetown Jewelers is still family-owned today. Alice was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and she will be dearly missed. She is preceded in death by her mother Sophie, her father Michael, her brother Edward, and her husband Eugene. Alice is survived by three loving children: Carol Couture (Michael), Marlene Chamberland (Richard) and Scott Chamberland (Deborah), her dear lifelong friend, Mary Hansen, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a celebration of Alice’s life on Monday, September 10 from 5-8 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 11, 9:00 a.m. until the time of service, 10:30 a.m. at The Oaks Funeral Home 1201 E. Irving Park Road (at Prospect), Itasca, IL. Interment Mt. Emblem Cemetery. For funeral info: 630-250-8588 or www.theoaksfh.com
