Biography

Dorothy Joan Zurek age 97; of Northbrook and formerly of Norwood Park Township and Chicago passed peacefully at home on February 28, 2019. She was the loving wife of the late John J. Zurek. Dorothy’s greatest joys were her caring children, Barbara (Ken) Szymura, Robert (Cathy) Zurek and Nancy (Gene) Rigitano. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, Jeffrey (Kathy) Szymura, Susan (Rob) Dwyer, Kimberly (Nate) Herbst, Gregory Zurek, Nick Rigitano and John (Kaitlin) Rigitano and adored her great grandchildren, Jack, Katie and Sophie Dwyer and Max, Michael and Chloe Herbst. Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving parents, Joseph and Stella Rempa and her in laws, Caroline and Simon Zurek. She was a loving sister to the late Robert Rempa and loving sister in law to the late Mary Winard and Casmir Zurek. Dorothy was a beloved cousin, aunt, friend and neighbor of many. Dorothy’s family would like to extend an extra special thanks to her granddaughter, Susan Dwyer for the loving care she showed to both her grandmother and family during this difficult time. The miles she traveled, the knowledge as a nurse, that allowed her to guide the family through those last days, and the compassion she provided to Dorothy and her loved ones is greatly appreciated. The family would like to give special thanks to Amita Hospice for Dorothy’s care in her last days. Visitation Monday, March 4th 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, March 5th 8:00 a.m. until time of funeral, 9:15 a.m. at The Oaks Funeral Home 1201 E. Irving Park Road (at Prospect), Itasca to Saint Philip the Apostle Church 1223 W. Holtz Avenue, Addison. Mass 10:00 a.m. Interment Saint Joseph Cemetery, River Grove.
