Biography

Francis William Schumacher, affectionately known as “Shoes” has died at the age of 89, 3 months shy of his 90th b-day. Frank is survived by his devoted wife, Mardell, of 61 years, though they had been together for 65. He is also survived by his loving daughter, Linda (son-in-law, Brian Medalis), son, Randy (daughter-in-law, Jen), grandchildren, Steven and Riley, his siblings, John and Marge, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Ellyn, siblings, James, Lois, and Andy (A.J.), and his parents Ella and Anselm. Frank enlisted in the regular Army and served honorably in Korea for two years as an MP and a member of the Honor Guard. Upon discharge he joined the Cook County Sheriff’s Dept. before becoming a data processing manager and then a successful salesman. Ultimately, he returned to the Cook County Sheriff’s Dept. where he happily served as the information officer until the age of 82. After moving to Elk Grove Village in 1960, Frank was constantly active in community activities serving as president of the Jaycees and Lions Club and being honored with the Melvin Jones Lions Club Award. He managed the VFW Hall, ran the Elk Grove Village annual parades as a Jaycee, and worked on the Miss Illinois Pageant. While at the courthouse, he helped with many charitable programs and was the only non-lawyer or judge recognized by the NWSBA for his service. He was also a member of the ELKS, Moose, and VFW. Frank enjoyed speaking to the 4th grade students at Clearmont School on Veterans’ Day about his experiences in Korea. Frank was an affectionate, caring, supportive and devoted husband, father and grandfather who set a great example for his son, son-in-law and grandson. His ready wit and willingness to help others exemplified his life. His sense of humor, zest for life, and love of family helped him survive decades with cancer. He will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure to know him. The visitation will be on Thursday, Sept. 5th from 3-10pm with a time to share memories at 7pm and from 10am until the service at 11am on Friday, the 6th before the interment at Acacia Park Cemetery. Respectful, proper attire is requested.
