Biography

Richard M. Scholten, devoted and loving husband to the late Joyce (Hansen) Scholten for 61 years and cherished father of Stephen (Peggy), Scott (Barbara) and Susan (Tim) Fahy died peacefully on February 5, 2018. Proud and cherished Papa to Katie (Tim) Monahan, Carly Scholten, Kimberly (Doug) Storrie, Rachael Scholten, Scott (Bari) Scholten, Bradley (Sherri) Scholten, Holly (Jake) Temme, Kelly Killpack and Chase Fahy. Loving Big Papa to Mac Monahan, Arthur Storrie, Declan Monahan, Calvin Storrie, Jaxton Scholten and Grace Scholten. Richard was born in Maple Hill, Iowa, to Joseph and Elizabeth Scholten on December 12, 1926. He was the brother of the late Joseph and Vionna and is survived by Dorothy and LaVonne. A proud Navy man, Richard served with the Seabees in the South Pacific during World War II. Richard graduated from Monmouth College after the war, where he met Joyce while assisting the freshman class with move in. Theirs was a story-book love story and they were inseparable for 61 loving years. Richard and Joyce moved to Elk Grove Village in 1957 as one of the first 100 families. They raised their family there and lived in Elk Grove for the remainder of their lives raising, their 3 children and watching their grandchildren grow. Being a part of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren's lives was his highest priority. Each of them, each of us, grew up knowing we were special. He was loved by the community and leaves a lasting memory for all whose lives he touched. Papa and Dede were regulars at Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Baseball, Musicals, Choir and Dance Recitals. He was so proud of each accomplishment, and was the honorary Grandpa for many of the teams and friends. Papa instilled in each family member a deep love for each other, and a passion for family traditions, for all things Disney, and the Cubbies. His legacy lives on with his family and the joy they find in coming together to celebrate family traditions and with each wonderful trip to Richard’s beloved Old Key West resort at the Disney Vacation Club. And so, Richard and Joyce’s love story starts a new chapter in heaven, together again. We will always... Love You More Papa.
