Biography

John “Jack” Karney passed away July 19, 2022. Beloved son of the late John J. and Julia Y.; Devoted brother of the late Barbara Ann. Lifelong friend of Sue Winter. Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, in recent years Jack was a resident of Elk Grove Village. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran. Retired longtime employee of the U.S. Postal Service. At age 13, Jack became a caddy at a local country club, continuing until he entered Loyola University after graduating high school. After collage, he became a salesman for Follett Book Company. He travelled to many college campuses helping with textbooks each semester. At 25, Jack was drafted by the Army and spent 9 years in active duty and Reserves. Most of his active service was spent as a power line installer in Germany. After his Army service, he became a salesman with an art supply company in Chicago where he became acquainted with many artists. When his sister, Barbara became handicapped after suffering a stroke, Jack and his mother moved to Elk Grove Village to care for her. Jack became a security guard with ABMC and took classes at Harper College where he earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. He then took the exam for the Post Office, working as a mail handler until his retirement. During retirement, he enjoyed visiting friends, shopping and meeting his fellow retirees at Uncle Bill’s.
